Wood is most of the hard fibrous material that makes up the stems and branches of trees or shrubs under the bark.

In plants, the composition of the cell wall varies greatly from cell to cell, as a result of the infiltration of various other substances into the cell wall.

Common substances are horny, suberous, wood, minerals and so on. Wood is hydrophilic, it has great hardness, therefore, the lignified walls both increase the mechanical strength and are permeable to water.
